The controversial moped-sharing service Revel is significantly expanding its footprint, launching an Uber and Lyft-esque ride-hailing service exclusively comprised of Tesla vehicles. Ambitiously, the company wants to begin with a fleet of 50 blue Teslas in New York City, before it has even obtained its license to legally operate in the city. Revel’s meteoric rise in New York has seen its mopeds become a staple of city streets. But the company has faced recent regulatory hurdles: It was shuttered temporarily last year after three people were killed and one was critically injured riding a Revel moped.
- New York City officials have quickly moved to say that they have not officially approved Revel’s new service, instead accusing Revel of attempting to “take advantage of rules intended to encourage existing drivers to transition to electric vehicles.”
