Amazon now says it mistakenly told employees to delete the social media app TikTok from their mobile devices, explaining that an email citing unspecified “security risks” was sent in error. According to The Wall Street Journal, a staff memo said the app — which is owned by the Chinese tech company ByteDance – had to be deleted by Friday in order to keep accessing work email by phone. Amazon’s flip-flop is happening as U.S.-China tensions increase over trade and technology and scrutiny intensifies over the security of TikTok’s user data.
