PepsiCo PEP released its 2019 sustainability report, Helping to Build a More Sustainable Food System, just last week, amidst global intensification of the coronavirus pandemic and a swell of anti-racism activism after the murder of George Floyd.
In the report, PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta says, “Even before the COVID-19 pandemic…the food system was under tremendous stress.” He goes on to say, “systemic problems require systemic solutions.” Given the evolving global crises, there is a question as to what place sustainability should take in the conversations. For PepsiCo, these issues are intertwined.
“Sustainability is still relevant because it is asking the same questions that everyone in society is asking today about inclusion and antiracism, which is, ‘what world do we want to live in?’ Our work in sustainability has been asking this globally,” says PepsiCo’s Director of Agriculture, Margaret Henry.
