‘No free lunch’ as tech perks dry up

If anything defined Silicon Valley culture before the pandemic, it was collaboration. But when tech employees eventually filter back to their campuses — likely in staggered shifts — it’s probable that the communal spaces which fostered that culture are gone. Cubicles could be back, and the freewheeling buffets that became standard at many tech workplaces could be replaced by boxed lunches. Some of the new perks on offer could include onsite COVID-19 tests, temperature checks and masks. Google employees have already been told they cannot expense meals at home or “repurpose unused budgets from things like cancelled events on perks like fitness,” CNBC reports.
