The state’s largest life sciences employer is giving more than $6.25 million to help individuals and businesses being impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. (NYSE: TAK) is donating $4 million to the American Red Cross to help the nonprofit maintain a sufficient supply of blood and other resources during the pandemic, the company said. The Red Cross has been issuing calls for blood donations after seeing an “alarming” amount of blood drive cancellations during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Takeda also plans to match employee donations to the American Red Cross, up to a collective total of $500,000.

The City of Cambridge Mayor’s Fund is receiving another $2 million from Takeda, while the town of Lexington’s emergency assistance fund will receive $250,000 for families in need during the outbreak. Both funds provide emergency assistance to individuals and families experiencing financial crises.
