Walmart is launching its own membership program to compete with Amazon, Recode reports, citing anonymous sources. Called Walmart+, the service would replace its Delivery Unlimited program, be cheaper than Amazon’s Prime and eventually add perks such as discounted fuel at the megaretailer’s filling stations and text messaging for orders. “The reality Walmart is facing is that Prime, which boasts more than 150 million members worldwide, has become a retail wrecking ball that’s impossible for competitors to ignore,” writes Recode. The e-commerce giant accounts for almost 40% of online sales; Walmart, 5%.
