Mattel Releases New Doll In Honor Of First-Ever Black Barbie’s 40th Anniversary – HypeHair

Mattel has just released a Barbie Signature doll celebrating its first-ever Black Barbie. Sure, the brand has released Black dolls since at least 1959, but they were all just friends of Barbie, like Christie and Francie.

It wasn’t until 1980, that one was released that was actually named Barbie. According to the tagline, she was “Black, beautiful and dynamite!” And, it was designed by a Black woman: Kitty Black Perkins.
