Health care kiosks are bringing the doctor to work – Boston Business Journal

The doctor will see you now — in your office.

American Well has launched kiosks providing patients with access to virtual video doctor visits, and has recently partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts to deploy the new service.

American Well said the kiosk system is the newest way the company is trying to broaden access to health care. The Boston-based company is partnering with health plans around the country to establish the model, which is starting to pop up in grocery stores, community health centers, and at employers’ offices.

The kiosks work like a souped-up telehealth visit. In addition to a screen that can connect patients with any on-call telehealth provider on the American Well platform, the kiosks feature a pulse oximeter, a thermometer, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, dermatoscope, otoscope and scale. Doctors can read blood oxygen levels, check blood pressure, take a close look at skin conditions, and even look inside patients’ ears without being in the room.
